About this piece
Original plotter drawing made from a field recording of the common raven. One of a kind. Part of the Sotabosc Acoustic Species series.
Full Description
The raven was recorded in Scandinavia.
Its call : frequency range 0.5 to 2.0 kHz, duration 6.2 seconds - was analysed for its acoustic signature: amplitude, spectral brightness, melodic contour, onset events, the ratio of sound to silence. Those measurements were fed into a geometric disruption system. A perfect field of concentric forms was given to the raven's voice. The marks you see are what the voice made of it.
This is not a drawing of a raven. It is a drawing by the raven or as close as that idea can be made physical. The process belongs to Sotabosc's ongoing practice of treating nature as author and the studio as translation infrastructure.
The clustered mass in the lower right emerged without intention from the data. It was not placed. Ravens are known to be self-aware. Draw your own conclusions.
